UPDATE: The Hamilton County Medical Examiner Office reports the cause of death of 25-year-old Cesar Alehandro Ramos appears to have been multiple gunshot wounds.
PREVIOUS STORY: “It's horrible, man. Oh my god. Yeah it's horrible. I mean, who wants to wake up and know that somebody got shot dead in the house behind you? I mean...no...no,” John Baker said following Monday's shooting that left a man dead after an encounter with Chattanooga police.
Baker has lived off of 15th Avenue for over thirty years.
And in the time he has lived here, seeing police lights isn't anything new.
"I've had them pull up right here in front of our home and fire a shotgun in the air. And then just drive off,” Baker said.
Baker says his wife heard the shots fired Chattanooga Police responded to.
They say the suspect was walking the street, showing a firearm, and firing shots at houses.
Officers arrived, approached the man and then shots were fired, according to Chattanooga police.
The man was shot and taken to the hospital, where he later died.
The name of the suspect has not yet been released, because investigators are still working to notify his family members.
Officers were out here for hours going door to door speaking with neighbors and collecting evidence.
Baker tells me he is thankful for all the work CPD has done for his community.
"To have that job, there is no way we could possibly pay them enough to walk into harms’ way the way they do,” Baker said.
He went on to add he has no idea what the city would be without them.
All the officers who responded to the call have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will be in charge of the investigation.
