UPDATE: Friday, contractors that were working on a portion of the U.S. 27 widening project finished ahead of schedule.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation didn't know contractors had already finished a project on the Olgiati Bridge until today but said they are happy to hear it's complete.

"They're getting really good at it,” Jennifer Flynn, a TDOT spokesperson, said.

Flynn saidTDOT gave the green light to start working under the Olgiati Bridge Thursday but didn't realize it would be a short turnaround.

According to Flynn, crews have done something similar before, which is why it only took a few hours. But now, they are looking to start the next phase of the widening project this month.

"They're going to Phase 3 of the project, so there will be some traffic shifts there on the main line of US 27, so that's the next big thing to come along on this project,” Flynn stated.

With contractors already finished with that portion of the widening project, Flynn is warning drivers to watch out for another project that will impact your commute this weekend.

Starting Friday night at 8:00 pm, TDOT crews will close the two right lanes of I-24 East to repair some damaged concrete slabs near the Germantown Road exit.

Jennifer Flynn said, "they’ll have it down to one lane, and it'll be one lane only until about tomorrow afternoon. Then, they'll open it to two lanes, and then Sunday, the concrete will cure and that afternoon it will probably be reopened to three lanes.”

Phase 3 of the widening project on the Olgiati Bridge will last from this month all the way until January of 2020 when the project is set to be completed.

PREVIOUS STORY: TDOT says that the expected work on the Olgiati Bridge on U.S. 27 in downtown Chattanooga has been completed.

That means drivers won't have to contend with the predicted lane closures.

TDOT explains that the contractor got started early on the work than expected and was able to complete the project Thursday night.

So no lane closures! Enjoy your drive across the Tennessee River!

PREVIOUS STORY: The outside lanes of the Olgiati Bridge will be closed for several days beginning Friday.

The outside lanes in both directions will close at 6:00 am Friday and will not reopen until potentially sometime Monday evening, the Tennessee Department of Transportation explained.

During this time, drivers will still be able to use the inside lanes.

While the lanes are closed, crews will work underneath the bridge as part of the U.S. 27 reconstruction project.

TDOT said some ramps will be affected by the work as well:

  • The on-ramp traffic from Manufacturers Road to U.S. 27 South at the Olgiati Bridge will remain open, but the ramp will be shortened during the work, so traffic merging onto U.S. 27 South should exercise extra caution.
  • The on-ramp traffic from 4th Street to U.S. 27 North at the Olgiati Bridge will remain open, but motorists will be required to stop before merging onto U.S. 27 North.

Drivers should be prepared in case there are additional ramp closures or traffic shifts.

TDOT reminds everyone to pay attention to road signs and changing conditions while driving through the work zone.
