A new sheriff has taken over in Bradley County.

Sheriff Steve Lawson was sworn in this morning at a ceremony at Bradley Central High School.

Lawson defeated incumbent Sheriff Eric Watson in the Republican primary in May. With no Democrat in the race, he became the sheriff-elect that night.

Sheriff Lawson explained what he plans to address right away.

"Five hundred and eight inmates when I took over at midnight in a 408-bed facility, people on floors. I've got to pay that attention. I want to see patrol cars on the road, but I've got to represent the corrections officers as well and balance that out," Sheriff Lawson said.

Sheriff Lawson hopes to fix the overcrowding issue at the jail.

He wants to work with officials on alternative sentencing to lower the number of inmates at the facility.
