UPDATE: An Athens family is shaken up after a man with a gunshot wound showed up on their porch.

The man was shot Wednesday morning at a house near an elementary school.

This caused the school to go on lockdown.

The family says this was a morning they certainly didn't expect.

Around 11 in the morning, the homeowner who did not wish to go on camera, heard an argument up the road.

A few moments later, she heard a gunshot.

Greg Lamb is the homeowner's son and told us what he knows about the incident.

“There was a guy who had obviously been shot in the leg, and he came up to her. She had already locked the door by this time, and called 911,” said Greg Lamb.

The victim sat in a chair until police arrived.

Lamb says the family rushed over to be with his mother and help her.

“My sister and our neighbor cleaned up most of the blood. He was on the porch for a little bit until the police got here,” said Lamb. “It was a little bit of a mess to clean up.”

Police say the man was shot by David Cruz Rodriguez across the street from North City Elementary.

The school was on lockdown for a couple of hours.

Lamb says he's glad law enforcement took this seriously.

“It looked like the police were taking care of business. They had everything blocked off. That's a great thing because it's always better to be safe than sorry,” said Lamb.

Lamb and his family have lived in this neighborhood for many years.

“There's not a lot of trouble. Sometimes you get the occasional bad apple but not an awful lot. It's a very peaceful neighborhood,” said Lamb.

Rodriguez is being held in the McMinn County Jail.

The victim was taken to a Knoxville hospital. It's unclear how he's doing.

PREVIOUS STORY: A shooting Wednesday morning in Athens forced the lockdown of a nearby school.

Athens police responded to a report of a man who showed up on a home's porch on Railroad Street, claiming to have been shot.

Once police arrived, they confirmed that the man had been shot in the stomach. He was taken to UT Medical Center in Knoxville.

As police investigated, they were able to determine that the shooting happened nearby at a house on Webb Street.

Police later arrested David Rodriguez after they coaxed him outside from a home.

Because the incident happened so close to North City Elementary School, school administrators made the decision to place the school into lockdown.

Police officers were stationed at the school when the initial call came in, and remained there until Rodriguez was taken into custody. The Police Department’s School Resource Officer also stayed at the school for the remainder of the school day.

Police will continue their investigation.

Rodriguez has been turned over to the McMinn County Jail, where he is being held on a warrant from Bradley County.

Athens Police Department will add further charges against Rodriguez as officers complete their investigation and appropriate charges are determined.

Athens Police Chief Cliff Couch said “I’m thankful that the officers involved in this incident were able to take Mr. Rodriguez into custody so quickly. It is intolerable that this behavior is happening so close to one of our schools. It is my sincere hope that the arrests we make today will finally end this behavior and make this neighborhood a safer place.”

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are asked to contact the Athens Police Department Detective Unit at 423-744-2730.
