Community helps make injured firefighter's parent's home wheelchair-accessible
The community came together Thursday to do some renovation work on Captain Shellie Thorne's parent's house.
Firefighters, family members and members of Neighborhood Helpers Volunteer Ministry built a ramp that can accommodate Shellie's wheelchair. In addition, volunteers worked inside the home to widen doorways to make the home more wheelchair-accessible.
"We'd like to thank Lowe's Home Improvement for the donated materials, and MISSION BBQ for their donation of food for the volunteers," a Chattanooga Fire Department spokesperson said. "This was a very heart-warming show of support for Shellie!"
On September 21, a benefit concert for Shellie will be held at Island Cove Marina, Outdoor Center and Resort off Highway 58.
"Proceeds from this event will help cover Shellie's considerable bills for the medical treatments she received and rehabilitation that will follow," the spokesperson explained.
The benefit concert will last from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
