UPDATE: Chattanooga police say that a woman who was fatally struck crossing Shallowford Road Tuesday morning was walking against the pedestrian signals.

The accident happened about 6:44am, according to police, in low light conditions.

The driver was going through the intersection with an active green light, when he saw the woman, swerved left and braked in an effort to stop.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

PREVIOUS STORY:  A woman hit by a car in Chattanooga Tuesday morning has died as a result of her injuries.

It happened just before 7:00 a.m. on Shallowford Road near Napier Road.

Investigators told Channel 3 a car traveling westbound on Shallowford Road struck the woman as she was crossing the street.

Police are not releasing her name at this time. They are still working to notify her family members.

Traffic was backed up in the area for several hours due to the police investigation.
