Officials say two Red Bank Police officers were nearly killed Friday when a distracted driver drove into the back of a police cruiser.

The officers, who were driving in separate cruisers, were working overtime looking for distracted driving issues. They had pulled over one distracted driver when another crashed into one of the patrol cars. No one was inside the vehicle at the time.

That caused a chain reaction of hitting both police cruisers and one of the officers who was standing outside. The other officer was in the front vehicle.

Both officers drove themselves to an area hospital. They have been released. The one who was hit complained of leg and back injuries.

The driver who crashed into the cruiser was cited for distracted driving and not having car insurance.

She was taken to a hospital. Her current condition is unknown, but police said they did not appear to be life-threatening.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
