ORIGINAL STORY: By the end of the night, we should know who our next choices are for governor of Tennessee.

Six Republicans and three Democrats are running to succeed Governor Bill Haslam, whose second term is ending.

Most of those seeking the office have made their way through the Tennessee Valley over the long course of the primary campaign, and we have certainly been bombarded with radio and television ads in the last few weeks.

Going alphabetically, here are the Republican candidates for governor:

  • Diane Black is a four-term congresswoman from Middle Tennessee, former state representative and senator and registered nurse. Her campaign in the closing weeks has focused on her time in Washington, her relationship with President Trump, and her stance against illegal immigration.
  • Randy Boyd was one of the first to announce his candidacy. He is a Knoxville businessman, who is the CEO of the company that owns PetSafe. He aided Governor Haslam as an adviser on education and as commissioner of economic and community development. Over the course of his campaign, he literally jogged across the state.
  • State Representative Beth Harwell from Middle Tennessee has just put down the gavel as speaker of the house in Nashville. Her most recent ads have focused on her endorsement of medicinal use of marijuana, mirroring a statement from President Trump.
  • Finally, businessman Bill Lee rounds out the top contenders for the GOP nomination. His ads tell you he is a successful CEO, and a dairy farmer. He is running as the ultimate political outsider and thinks that explains his late surge in the polls.

The Democratic candidates have played nice during their primary campaign.

Here are the candidates in the running for the Democratic nomination for governor:

  • Karl Dean is a two-term former mayor of Nashville, was a public defender and big parts of his pitch are education and a kind of anti-hyperpartisanship approach.
  • State Representative Craig Fitzhugh is from Ripley in West Tennessee. He's the house minority leader, a small-town banker, a graduate of UT law and former JAG in the United States Air Force.
  • Mezianne Vale Payne is the only woman on the Democratic ballot in the gubernatorial race. She supports medical marijuana, single-payer insurance, and technical high schools. If elected, Payne says she would not support a state income tax.

The polls close across the state at 8:00 p.m. EST.
