UPDATE: Varnell police officer resigns after complaint of inappropriate touching
UPDATE: Varnell police Officer Patrick Hayes resigned Thursday after being placed on unpaid suspension following a complaint that he inappropriately touched a woman at a convenience store.
Hayes, a veteran of the Varnell Police Department for nearly 11 years, was seen in surveillance video touching the victim according to the incident report.
He chose to resign rather than be fired, according to the incident report obtained by Channel 3, following a meeting with the mayor and city administrator.
PREVIOUS STORY: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Varnell police officer.
GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles confirmed to Channel 3 allegations of inappropriate contact between a Varnell officer and a citizen have been made.
The investigation is in the final stages and will soon be turned over to the district attorney's office.
