Whitewater paddling competition will return to the Upper Ocoee River this summer, with the Ocoee River Basin Foundation hosting the Ocoee River Championships August 24 - 26, 2018.

Participants will compete in slalom racing, freestyle, downriver racing, boater cross, and SUP events on the river.

The Ocoee River Championships will be held at the Ocoee Whitewater Center on Highway 64 near Ducktown, TN, which is one hour from Chattanooga and a convenient drive from Atlanta and North Alabama.

The site was the host for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games whitewater competition.

There are also plans in place for a squirt boat competition on the middle section of the Ocoee.

The ORBF plans to assist in the protection and revitalization of the Ocoee River Basin, according to their Facebook page. The foundation's efforts will be focused on:

  • Creating kayak, canoe, and SUP locking stations at both the middle Ocoee put-in/upper Ocoee takeout and the middle Ocoee private takeout. The goal of this project is to assist the private boaters by providing a safe location to lock gear while running shuttle.
  • Building a changing station for private boaters at the middle Ocoee private boater takeout.
