Three years later, work is moving forward on the East Brainerd road widening project.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) opened a two-mile stretch of the road on Thursday evening.

Crews started working around 9:00 a.m. Thursday, re-striping the lanes for the five new lanes and bike lanes on East Brainerd Road.

That work is all finished now and the orange barrels have been put aside.

This is something TDOT has said will help with congestion in the area. About 30,000 cars travel on East Brainerd Road each day.

Channel 3 spoke with a man who lives right off East Brainerd. He said he’s been looking forward to this day since he moved into his home last year.

"That will be nice not to hear all of the construction vehicles and moving," said Leslie Renegar, an area resident.

This was one of the last phases of a $23-million project.

There is still work to be done just after Banks Road, but it will be at least another month until it's finished.
