UPDATE: The woman shot at an East Brainerd Road apartment complex Monday night has passed away.

Lauren Bonnema, 25, died at a local hospital after she was shot in the 7700 block of East Brainerd Road.

A man, who was also a resident at the home where the shooting occurred, has been charged with criminally negligent homicide.

Cody Neal Gilliland, 29, was arrested after being interviewed. Gilliand told officers that he shot Bonnema accidentally with his rifle.

Gilliland said he was in his bedroom cleaning his AR-15 style weapon when his dog came in, according to the arrest report. He added that the dog refused to leave, so he yelled and kicked the animal. When the "dog went to jump at him," Gilliland tried to kick the dog and ended up striking the wall causing the gun to go off.

A short time later, the report explains, Gilliland found Bonnema lying in the floor with a gunshot wound to the head.

A Chattanooga Police spokesperson said," investigators determined the suspect's gross negligent handling of a loaded firearm led to the victim's death."

Members of the Violent Crime Bureau are investigating the shooting.

Gilliland is currently in the Hamilton County Jail. His bond is set at $200,000.
