As one student put it, "People are always going to be sick," so it is a good idea to examine a potential medical career, first-hand.

Dalton Public Schools, Mercer University School of Medicine, Dalton State College  and Hamilton Medical Center have formed the Dalton Healthcare Pathway Consortium for the purpose of creating a robust healthcare pathway for students from middle to high school in Dalton that will help students to consider a career as a physician or other medical professional.

As an outgrowth of this partnership, the first Med Camp was held this week at Hamilton Medical Center and Dalton State College. Some 30 rising freshmen at Dalton High School participated.

Several interactive activities included Hamilton Medical Center physicians and employees working with the students, as well as medical students from Mercer.

This unique consortium is designed to open doors for students to pursue health occupations as a career. The timing is good with the ongoing expansion of Hamilton Medical Center.

Also, Mercer University School of Medicine is focused on assisting students from backgrounds that have been traditionally under-served and under-represented in the healthcare field to choose medicine as their field of study.
