Hamilton Co. School chaperones to have background checks
Individuals wanting to volunteer to chaperone overnight trips for Hamilton County Schools will now be required to have a background check before being approved.
Student safety is a main concern as Hamilton County students head back to class.
This includes knowing *who* is chaperoning students on overnight trips.
Beginning this school year, parents or guardians wanting to volunteer to chaperone overnight trips must have a background check.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Kirk Kelly says the decision follows the assault involving the Ooltewah basketball team during a tournament trip to Gatlinburg last year.
The cost of the background check is 35 dollars and is the responsibility of the individual.
Zacery Brown, Assistant Superintendent for School Operations says the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be handling the backgrounds.
The trial for the Ooltewah assault case is set for August 30th.
