A Rossville toddler is in the intensive care unit at a Chattanooga hospital following a near drowning.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson says his deputies responded to a home on Gail Street shortly after 7:30 Sunday evening.

Wilson says the two year-old was found unresponsive in the family’s swimming pool by another juvenile, who alerted two adults at the home at the time.

Deputies performed CPR and were able to get a response from the child, who was then transported to a Chattanooga hospital.

Authorities say the child had been in the swimming pool with his grandparents shortly before the near drowning occurred. After exiting the pool, it appears the grandparents were distracted and the child climbed into the pool, using the pool ladder.

Sheriff Wilson says at last check the child was still in the intensive care unit.

Walker County’s Child Fatality Review Team was dispatched to the scene, which is standard according to department protocol anytime there is a near drowning incident. The team included representatives of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, GBI, DFACS and the district attorney’s office. Wilson says it’s too soon in the investigation to determine if any charges may be filed in connection to the incident.

The child remains in critical condition.
