UPDATE: Identities released in deadly I-75/I-24 split crash
Chattanooga police says a person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but succumbed to their injuries. Another person in the vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries.
A family traveling from Detroit to Savannah, Georgia was involved in a fatal accident Saturday morning near the I-75/I-24 split.
Curtis Byrd Jr. was driving in a 2015 Ford Explorer and failed to maintain his lane, drifting off to the left side of the road where he struck a guardrail which entered the passenger area of the Explorer.
Chattanooga police say Byrd Jr's uncle, Wilbert was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries. Curtis Byrd Jr. suffered minor injuries.
The accident has traffic backed up for a number of miles, as far back as the East Brainerd exit.
CPD says no charges will be filed at this time.
