UPDATE: Georgia State Patrol officers are investigating a crash that killed a driverTuesday morning.

It happened around 7:30 a.m on Airport Road in Dalton, about a quarter of a mile South of the Dalton Municipal Airport.
GSP officials say that white pickup truck was traveling southbound in the 4200  block of Airport Road when it crossed over the center line, hitting a suburban head on. The impact forced the suburban to roll over onto it's side. The male driver of the suburban did not survive his injuries, officials say he died on the scene.

"I hope all the kids are okay and everybody makes it out pretty good," driver Anthony Bellas. "It's a sad situation."

Investigators say the crash involved 3 young children. A female passenger and small child riding in the suburban were taken to the hospital with injuries.
"First responders arrived on the scene and there were 4 injuries," said Sgt. Tommy Sturdivan, Georgia State Patrol. "There were three children in that Suburban, all under the age of two, one of the kids has non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ground EMS."
Sgt. Sturdivan tells Channel 3 that seat belts may have saved their lives.
"That breaks my heart because I hate to see kids involved in a wreck," said Bellas. "This road right here, I call it a drag strip, they fly through this road and they don't watch speed limits or nothing through here."

The driver of the pickup was airlifted to Erlanger hospital in critical condition. Investigators say it's still unclear why his vehicle crossed over into the wrong lane of traffic.

"We do know that the driver of the ford ranger is a 3rd shift employee at a local carpet mill," said Sgt. Sturdivan.
While the cause of the crash is still unknown, residents in this community hope the crash will serve as a reminder to drivers passing through.

"They need to slow down and if you're tired, pull over and stop and rest," said Bellas.

Neighbors say they are praying for both families involved. The condition of the man driving the pickup truck remains serious. Investigators say charges are pending against him in this case. The woman and all three children in the Suburban are expected to be okay.

Authorities say they will release the identity of the man who was killed once the family has been notified.
