Channel 3 arrived at the 64 Package Store just as family members were notifying the owner that his friend and business partner was shot during an attempted robbery.

The owner is from Polk County but the family Skyped him from Dubai, where he's working as a contractor.

"You know," said Griffith, "It's just so unexpected. So unexpected."

Marc Griffith just heard the news that his friend of more than 20 years was shot last night working at his package store.

"He is a fantastic guy, and I don't say that lightly," Griffith said.

A man trying to rob the package store shot 48 year old Keith Crouch Wednesday night.

Griffith said his business has never been about making money.

"You come down, you hang out, you watch a game, so I like to look at it like a pub-type neighborhood atmosphere."

And he never thought it would be the target of an armed robbery.

"I never thought that someone would take advantage of that."

Crouch called 9-1-1 himself and is now in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Erlanger Hospital.

"The victim didn't want to give up the money and a fight ensued," said Polk County Sheriff Steve Ross

The suspect shot Crouch once in the upper body before leaving with nothing.

How he got away, is what the Polk County Sheriff is focusing on.

"A maroon colored compact car with a front fender that's white in color," Sheriff Ross said, "So that's a little odd and that's pretty much what we're going on now, just trying to locate this vehicle."

Multiple counties in three states are searching for the suspect, who is facing multiple felony charges.

"At the least be facing attempted robbery and aggravated assault at this point," said Sheriff Ross.

The suspect is described as a while male in his 20's with a tall, thin build.
