Neighbors say stabbing victim not the type to start fights
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A 15 year old is recovering after being stabbed. It happened during a fight Tuesday night.
Detectives and witnesses tell Channel 3 several people were involved, but don't know what started it or why it turned so violent.
Chattanooga Police are investigating the stabbing. It happened in the Avondale neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
They say the young victim is expected to be ok and is being treated for his stab wound. No arrests have been made in the case and they're not releasing any suspect information.
Neighbors saw the scene unfold, but say they can't understand why someone would stab the teen.
"I was like wow, this time it's a 15 year old who plays with my kids," neighbor Lashundra Brown said.
Brown says the shock of what happened still hasn't worn off. The sight of crime tape left behind and blood on the boy's front door is a visible reminder.
"That's too scary," Brown said.
The fight broke out on Camden Street.
"Probably about five on five, something like that," Brown said.
"The investigators found out there was a fight earlier that night outside the residence with several people involved and that's when the juvenile was stabbed in the abdomen," Chattanooga Police Officer Nathan Hartwig said.
"Yeah I heard all the arguing and stuff but there be so much stuff going on around this side of town, we're used to arguing and people fussing," Brown said.
Although several neighbors witnessed the fight, no one seems to know just what it was about.
"No idea what they were fighting about, and I bet it wasn't nothing worth stabbing about. I bet you that. Nothing worth this boy, 15-year-old boy, almost losing his life," Brown said.
The teen is in the hospital. Brown says he's never been the type to start trouble.
"Every time I see him it's 'hey Ms. Shundra B.' He's polite. Very nice kid. It was shocking. He's a really nice kid. Neighborhood kid. Never leaves out of the neighborhood. He stays right there in his yard all the time," Brown said.
As a single mother of five, she's disturbed at how young the victim is. Police agree, saying it's not unheard of, but rare for someone so young to be the victim of a violent crime. They wouldn't comment on whether the other people fighting were teens or adults.
"That was really scary right there. That was an eye opener. Now I've got to keep my kids out from around there," Brown said.
No arrests have been made. If you have any information on who may be responsible for stabbing the teen, you're asked to call the Chattanooga Police Department.
