Police make arrest in housing scam
CLARKSVILLE, TN. (AP) - Clarksville police say nearly two dozen people so far are listed as victims of an alleged housing scam that mostly preyed upon military families.
Authorities say 25-year-old Stephanie Marie Jenkins Hairston has been charged with multiple counts of felony theft in the case.
Police Sgt. Cheryl Anderson tells The Leaf-Chronicle that the alleged scam netted $400 to $2,200 per victim. Anderson says four more victims will be added to the case once they arrive in Clarksville and file reports.
Among the victims is Lauren Klein. She thought she had found the perfect home to rent for herself, her husband and their 2-year-old daughter in their move to Fort Campbell. She sent a deposit and first month's rent, but when the family arrived in Clarksville, they discovered they had been deceived.
