HAMILTON COUNTY, TN. (WRCB)—An internal affairs investigation is underway after an inmate at the Hamilton County Jail died Saturday morning.

Janice Atkinson, spokesperson for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, says 37-year-old Gihon Hardaway was pronounced dead at a local hospital following a medical emergency while in custody.

Atkinson says Hardaway was arrested by Chattanooga Police Thursday on charges of resisting arrest, driving on revoked, improper registration and an outstanding warrant for possession of controlled substance.

Hamilton County Investigators and the Internal Affairs Division are investigating the death. 

Hardaway's body was taken to the Hamilton County Medical Examiners for further investigation.
