HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Officials say Delta Air Lines will start offering flights to a coastal South Carolina town from Atlanta in May and New York City in June.

News outlets report Delta will begin flying to Hilton Head Island Airport from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on May 23 and from New York's LaGuardia Airport on June 8. Nonstop flights between Hilton Head Island and both cities will be available.

Beaufort County, South Carolina, Airports Director Jon Rembold said at a news conference Wednesday morning that a runway extension finished last year attracted Delta to return. The airline stopped flights to the Hilton Head airport roughly a decade ago partly because of its short runway.

Delta's new service will provide travelers direct access to the area, as it already flies to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah, Georgia.
