Former Hamilton County Commissioner Bill Bennett passed away at the age of 82 Friday.

Leaders from across the Tennessee Valley are sharing their memories of the former assessor of property.

Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said the community has suffered a "tremendous loss."

"The passing of Bill Bennett is a tremendous loss to not only his family, but this community. Bill's leadership in various elected offices has left an indelible mark on Hamilton County.

Bill always liked to describe himself as "a humble servant of the people." Humble he was, but more importantly Bill was truly a servant of the people. Whether serving as a county commissioner or as the Hamilton County Assessor, Bill was truly dedicated to the public welfare. Never more so than when he took his personal challenge with cancer and became a relentless advocate for a cure for multiple myeloma. We always enjoyed Bill's visits to our office every year with survivors of the disease and learning the latest developments in his crusade to beat this deadly disease.

Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew him and especially among those of us who were privileged to work alongside him and were able to call him associate and more importantly...friend.

We share Bill's family's grief and remember them in our prayers this weekend."

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann also shared his condolences.

Senator Bob Corker said he was thankful for the friendship he had with Bennett.

"Throughout his decades in public life, Bill Bennett touched the lives of thousands of people in Hamilton County with his unique mix of kindness, perseverance and commitment to service. I am thankful for his many years of friendship and grateful for his life that was well lived."

Former Representative Zach Wamp tweeted his condolences.

Representative Mike Carter said Bennett was the first politician he ever supported.

"Hamilton County lost a great father, a great friend and a great leader today. Bill Bennett was the first politician I ever supported. I’ll miss him. Please remember his family in your prayers."

Tennessee state Representative-elect Robin Smith said, "Heaven gained a precious soul."
