The Marion County Sheriff's Office says their former sheriff died in a car accident on Highway 28 Thursday.

Sheriff Bo Burnett says former Sheriff Loyd Hood was on the passenger side of a car that was hit from behind near the entrance to Moss Farm.

The driver of the car Loyd was in, James Layne, was airlifted to Erlanger.

He is in critical condition.

The name and condition of the driver who hit the car Hood was in have not been released.

Hood served as Marion County Sheriff from 1974 to 1986. He was 76 years old.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and Jasper City Police are investigating the crash.
