PREVIOUS UPDATE (09/18/2018): The America's Got Talent live finale will be star studded with local talent. Chattanooga native Micheal Ketterer and former Lee University's Shin Lim will take the stage during Tuesday night's final live performances.
Michael’s family flew out to Los Angeles on Monday. Channel 3 spoke with his brother Jake on Facetime. Jake says this will be the family's first time watching Michael perform live on set since he’s been on the show.
“This is just a fun opportunity for him to be a part of,” Jake said. “To see where he’s at now it’s just been awesome. He’s been preparing himself for this moment his whole life.”
Michael's family says he's been in the spotlight long before AGT. The Red Bank High School graduate left his mark performing in school talent shows. He was also voted “most attractive” his senior year. Now, the rising star is an AGT finalist, and he's working with one of country’s biggest artists, Garth Brooks, who wrote a song for Michael to perform during Tuesday’s finale.
“Garth Brooks is like a hero to my brother,” said Jake.
It's not clear how America will vote, but the Red Bank community has his back.
Michael's alma mater held a pep rally, chanting his name and wishing him luck. As the saying goes, 'once a lion, always a lion.'

PREVIOUS STORY: A Chattanooga native will be among the contestants taking the stage next month during NBC's 'America’s Got Talent' live performances.
Red Bank High School graduate and married father of six, Michael Ketterer, captured viewers’ hearts when he recently sang on the show.
“Nothing could prepare me for walking out on that stage in front of that panel of four judges. It’s way more than even that room, it’s like a global stage,” Ketterer told Channel 3.
Ketterer won over judge Simon Cowell who gave him the golden buzzer during auditions sending him straight to the live shows. The exciting moment happened in March but Ketterer had to keep it a secret for months. “That was probably one of the hardest things that I’ve ever had to do just because it’s a huge life experience and I couldn’t even share it with anyone,” said Ketterer.
Now that the word is out, Ketterer is receiving support from all over the Tennessee Valley.
He grew up in Chattanooga and graduated from Red Bank High School.
He now lives in California and works as a pediatric mental health nurse.
Ketterer and his wife adopted five children from foster care, one of whom has cerebral palsy.
If he wins the competition and the $1 million prize, he says he’ll buy his family a new home that’s easier for his son to maneuver.
“I want to get him a house where it’s handicap accessible where he can move throughout the home. Right now, we’ve only got about one room in the entire house that he can remotely kind of manipulate through.
I would love for him to have the freedom and do everything he’s capable of doing,” said Ketterer.
When Ketterer steps into the spotlight his family will be there watching.
Whether he wins or not, he’s sure to inspire others along the way.
“It’s been a wild ride that I didn’t expect,” said Ketterer.
Ketterer's live performance is scheduled for August 14.
You can watch America’s Got Talent each Tuesday night on Channel 3.
