Chattanooga native competes in 'America's Got Talent'
A Chattanooga native will be among the contestants taking the stage next month during NBC's 'America’s Got Talent' live performances.
Red Bank High School graduate and married father of six, Michael Ketterer, captured viewers’ hearts when he recently sang on the show.
“Nothing could prepare me for walking out on that stage in front of that panel of four judges. It’s way more than even that room, it’s like a global stage,” Ketterer told Channel 3.
Ketterer won over judge Simon Cowell who gave him the golden buzzer during auditions sending him straight to the live shows. The exciting moment happened in March but Ketterer had to keep it a secret for months. “That was probably one of the hardest things that I’ve ever had to do just because it’s a huge life experience and I couldn’t even share it with anyone,” said Ketterer.
Now that the word is out, Ketterer is receiving support from all over the Tennessee Valley.
He grew up in Chattanooga and graduated from Red Bank High School.
He now lives in California and works as a pediatric mental health nurse.
Ketterer and his wife adopted five children from foster care, one of whom has cerebral palsy.
If he wins the competition and the $1 million prize, he says he’ll buy his family a new home that’s easier for his son to maneuver.
“I want to get him a house where it’s handicap accessible where he can move throughout the home. Right now, we’ve only got about one room in the entire house that he can remotely kind of manipulate through.
I would love for him to have the freedom and do everything he’s capable of doing,” said Ketterer.
When Ketterer steps into the spotlight his family will be there watching.
Whether he wins or not, he’s sure to inspire others along the way.
“It’s been a wild ride that I didn’t expect,” said Ketterer.
Ketterer's live performance is scheduled for August 14.
You can watch America’s Got Talent each Tuesday night on Channel 3.
