UPDATE: Chattanooga Police are still working to figure out how a man ended up dead inside a dumpster. This weekend, the body of 60-year-old Robert Townsend was found on Laura Street near Glenwood Drive.

Neighbors tell Channel 3 they never saw anything suspicious. They didn't know anything was going on until police knocked on the door to let them know a body was found inside a dumpster.

Only a few duplexes line the road on Laura Avenue. Neighbors said they do not see much activity on the dead end road. Saturday, things were different. Chattanooga Police filled the neighborhood after Robert Townsend’s body was found.

Neighbors said about six months ago, a new neighbor purchased the home where Townsend’s body was found. The owner was in the middle of flipping the property and rented a dumpster for the renovations.

A man living close by said he was walking outside early Saturday morning when he noticed a strong stench coming from somewhere near the home. He knew something was wrong and contacted the homeowner.

A few minutes later police were on property beginning their investigation.

Police are still trying to figure out how the 60-year-old was killed, or how long the body was there.

Members of the Violent Crime Bureau are investigating.
