A good Samaritan came to the rescue of a starving dog Wednesday night that apparently just gave birth to puppies.

Bob Citrullo with the Humane Educational Society in Chattanooga says "Leah" was found near a gym in the 1800 block of Kirby Avenue.

Pictures of Leah show that it's been a while since she's had any food and Citrullo says the hot pavement made her paws raw.

Citrullo says Leah spent Wednesday night at the HES shelter, which is now her new home until she's available for adoption.

Citrullo says it was evident that Leah recently gave birth to puppies.

Volunteers gathered on Kirby Avenue on Thursday evening to search for the puppies but were not successful.

Citrullo says the puppies won't last long in the summer heat. Volunteers are encouraged to help look for the puppies.

If you have any information about Leah or know where her puppies could be, please call HES at (423) 624-5302.
