Police baffled after pole goes through car, no one hurt
A crash Thursday morning south of downtown has some scratching their heads.
It happened on Wilson Road near Rossville.
Others believe a higher power was watching over the driver.
The scene is one you have to see to believe.
"In 20 years, I've never seen one like that one," Master Patrol Officer Eric Milchak with the Chattanooga Police Department said.
Milchak responded to the call of an accident with injuries on Wilson Road outside D & D Auto Salvage Thursday morning.
When he got there, he saw a crashed Dodge Avenger with a fence pole sticking through the windshield and into the driver's seat, with no one inside.
"I just thank God it didn't kill him," Dennis Goins said.
Goins heard the crash a few feet away outside his auto salvage business and saw two men get out of the car and leave before police got there.
He's amazed no one was hurt.
"I believe when he come around the curve right there he went to sleep or fell asleep or he fell over the seat or something. He had to. God had his hand on him, that's all I know," he added.
Goins hopes insurance will cover the cost of fixing the fence but that can't be worked out until police figure out who owns the car and who was driving because the tag isn't registered to the vehicle.
All they know is the driver is lucky the damage wasn't worse.
"The fact that he was able to get out of that car with the speed that that pole would have came through and straight through the center of the seat is just unbelievable," Milchak said.
