Now, elected state and federal officials, as well as those seeking office this November, are weighing in on the President's choice.

U.S. Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court plays a crucial role in our democracy, and the process of advice and consent on presidential nominations is one of the most serious responsibilities we have as United States senators,” said Corker. “For more than 12 years, Judge Kavanaugh has served honorably on the federal bench, hearing critical cases before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a well-respected jurist who understands the importance of upholding the Constitution and applying the law in a fair and independent manner. I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh during the confirmation process.”

U.S. Senator David Perdue from Georgia released the following statement:

“President Trump has again fulfilled his promise to the American people and put forward an outstanding nominee to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Throughout his remarkable legal career, Brett Kavanaugh has shown a commitment to upholding our country’s Constitution. These principles are the bedrock of our nation and have made the United States exceptional since its founding.

“Judge Kavanaugh has an impressive academic and legal background. He graduated from Yale Law School, clerked for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, served as staff secretary for President George W. Bush, and served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for more than a decade. Judge Kavanaugh understands the long-lasting impact Supreme Court decisions have on our nation, and I look forward to meeting with him soon.”

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson from Georgia released the following statement:

“I congratulate Judge Kavanaugh, who is a talented and experienced jurist, on his nomination to our nation’s highest court. I firmly believe that justices who understand and apply the law based on the U.S. Constitution, and not on their own personal political views, should fill seats on our Supreme Court. Judge Kavanaugh’s record indicates that he shares a strong commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law. I look forward to meeting with him soon and working with my Senate colleagues and the administration during the confirmation process to ensure that this highly qualified candidate is voted on by the Senate in time for the Court’s next session.”

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann who represents Tennessee's 3rd District released the following statement:

“I applaud President Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. Judge Kavanaugh’s extensive record of proven, conservative ideology will be essential in the future decisions of the Supreme Court. In such a pivotal time in our nation’s history, let us remember that the role of the Supreme Court is to interpret the Constitution as our Founding Fathers intended, and I believe that Judge Kavanaugh will carry out this role faithfully. Over the weeks to come, I hope that the Senate acts quickly to confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court.”

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement:

"Tonight, President Trump nominated a strong defender of the Constitution and champion of the rule of law to the Supreme Court," said Chairwoman McDaniel. "Judge Brett Kavanaugh has proven his commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans through a distinguished career on the D.C. Circuit and his lasting service to our nation. Judge Kavanaugh is the best choice to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy and Senate Democrats must put partisan politics aside and vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court."

Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party Mary Mancini released the following statement:

“We know this Supreme Court confirmation process will be a long, hard battle and there is no doubt that if Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed, we will be at risk of losing some of our most important rights and protections, like the protections provided by the Affordable Care Act,” Mancini said. “During this process, our goal in Tennessee will be to stand strong for our values and focus on electing more Democrats -- from the Courthouse to the U.S. Senate -- who will ensure that every Tennessean, no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you live, will have the opportunity for a better life for yourself and your family.”

Chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party Scott Golden released the following statement:

"Brett Kavanaugh us a highly qualified and excellent pick by President Trump to serve on the Supreme Court. In his time on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, he has had over 300 published opinions. What you see is what you get: a judge who will apply the law as written and enforce the text, structure, and original understanding of the constitution. I applaud President Trump and look forward to Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation."

Former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, who is running to fill the senate seat currently held by Bob Corker, released the following statement:

“An important part of a Senator's job is to approve or reject appointments the President makes to the Judiciary. In the Senate, I’ll vote for or against a nominee based solely on whether I believe them to be highly qualified and ethical -- not based on partisan politics. Looking ahead: the President’s Supreme Court nominee deserves a fair and timely confirmation hearing. This is an opportunity for the Senate to get back to basics and show it can do its job.

I’ll be watching the process carefully, formulating my thoughts based on the qualifications presented, holding my judgement until after the hearings conclude and then sharing with Tennesseans how I would vote."
