Family chooses unique way to say goodbye to son
NEW ORLEANS (WDSU) The family of a New Orleans shooting victim who died last month prepared his body for his wake over the weekend in a way they said honors his memory.
Renard Matthews died in a shooting June 25 near North Tonti and Independence streets.
New Orleans police said Matthews was found with gunshot wound to his head.
Matthews, who attended McDonogh 35 High School, loved the Boston Celtics and playing video games. That's how his family chose to remember him at his wake Sunday.
Relatives sent NBC affiliate WDSU a photo of Matthews' body at the wake at the Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home in Treme. He is dressed in a Celtics jersey, holding a video game controller and sitting next to his favorite snacks.
Matthews, a native of New Orleans, will be buried Tuesday at Interment Providence Memorial Park. His obituary can be viewed online.
