UPDATE: The Chattanooga police officer who rescued a two year old from inside of a stolen SUV spoke publicly on Wednesday.

Police discovered that vehicle near Derby Circle and East Fourth Street on Tuesday.

Many on social media have seen the picture of Officer James Plumlee taking care of a little boy. He's a father himself.

Officer Plumlee remembers the moment he found the two year old in the SUV.

"I realized he was in the car. Luckily, I saw him move. Once I opened the door, he started crying. I almost started crying because I was happy we'd found him," Officer James Plumlee said.

Officer Plumlee said the boy was extremely hot and in distress.

The two year old spent less than an hour in the car before officers found him. The heat worried them since temperatures can skyrocket in a car in a matter of minutes.

"It was tough. We're trained to do a job. I didn't do anything any of the officers in the Chattanooga Police Department wouldn't have done. It really hit home," Officer Plumlee said.

Police said that SUV was stolen from the Vance Avenue area with the little boy still inside it. The thief left it near Derby Circle and East Fourth Street.

That's at least a mile apart.

Police said a state-wide alert was almost issued for the child.

"We reached out, I believe, to the TBI for an AMBER alert. This was all going very quickly because time is of the essence," Sgt. Jason Wood of the Chattanooga Police Department.

He was taken to the hospital in a police cruiser to be checked out.

Officer Plumlee said he's thankful the boy is with his family again.

"It's one of the best feelings. I know for me and probably any officer is reuniting the child with his mom and dad. It's the best feeling in the world," Officer Plumlee said.

Police are still looking for the person responsible for stealing the car and kidnapping the child. If you have any information, call the Chattanooga Police Department.
