An eighth-grade student at Oliver Middle School in Nashville has passed away.

According to Metro Schools, Ariana Binave died unexpectedly due to a medical condition.

Her father, Salim, said she began complaining last weekend of a sore throat.

By last Sunday evening, she was having trouble breathing.

Ariana was taken to the hospital and given antibiotics, but she continued to get worse.

"They said she had pneumonia and a lung infection. They did their best to treat her, but she couldn't make it," said Salim.

The Oliver Middle School principal, Stephen Sheaffer, released the following statement about the student:

She was deeply loved by her family, friends, and by the Oliver faculty and staff. Prior to attending Oliver, she was a student at Shayne Elementary. She was seldom seen without a smile on her face and was an absolute joy to have in school.

Metro Schools said its “deeply saddened by this loss." Grief counseling will be available to students and staff throughout the week as needed.

A retired School Resource Office also returned to the school today to comfort students.

They are in shock. They are hurting," said Stephen Slater. "Little Ariana was just constant smiles. In her face, you could see a warm spirit. Her eyes twinkled. Her big smile was infectious."
