UPDATE: The Sequatchie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal stabbing that happened Tuesday night just north of Dunlap.

Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock tells Channel 3 the stabbing happened about 6:15pm CT.

John Wayne Sanders, 61, was stabbed in the stomach by his wife Jerri Sanders. Channel 3 has learned that he was able to call 911 to tell dispatchers he needed an ambulance.

Jerri Sanders is now in custody, charged with criminal homicide. Deputies said that she washed and cleaned the steak knife she used to stab her husband, and put it on the kitchen counter before police arrived. Investigators are still working to determine what the two were arguing about.

"If tempers flare and you lose your temper, you're a bigger person to walk away then you are to do something like she did and probably spend the rest of your life incarcerated," said Sheriff Hitchcock.

Officials say Jerri Sanders was already on probation for stabbing her husband in the back some six- eight months ago.

"She is on probation for Aggravated Assault, where she actually stabbed him in the back and cut his arm about 6 or 8 months ago," said Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock. "John Wayne was a goodhearted old boy, I mean he'd help you anyway he could. Don't get me wrong, John Wayne had his faults, but he didn't deserve this."

First responders had to break down the front door of the home to enter. Sanders was airlifted to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, where he died during surgery.

"Upon arrival he was locked in the house and she was outside. They had to make entry to get in with EMS to get him out. He had received one stab wound to the upper left side of his stomach, which penetrated his spleen," said Sheriff Hitchcock.

Family members describe the 61-year-old as a good hard working man who loved his family and the outdoors. They say he married Jerri about 5 years ago.  The family tells Channel 3, the two argued often, but he wouldn't leave out of love.

Sanders is being held in the Sequatchie County jail without bond.
