UPDATE: Elderly woman dies in Dade County mobile home fire
Payne told Channel 3 an 89-year-old woman died and a second person suffered second degree burns.
UPDATE: A fire claimed the life of an 89-year-old woman in Dade County, Saturday. The Georgia State Fire Marshal's office tells Channel 3, another person escaped the fire with injuries.
Friends say the victim, Virginia Webb, could barely walk due to multiple health issues. Still, she was able to make it outside onto her front porch where she called out for help.
"It's just very sad that you know nobody could get to her in time," said one neighbor
Neighbors say the elderly woman lived in the home with two of her children and knew everyone around.
"She was a sweet little old lady, she kept to herself, she stayed in there and she was disabled, " said one neighbor. " Everybody here knew her and she was just as sweet as she could be and it's heartbreaking that this happened to her."
Officials say the fire broke out around 5:30 Saturday night and spread quickly. Several neighbors saw flames towering at least 15 feet above the home and ran to help.
Witnesses say Webb was able to make it outside onto her front deck, before she collapsed.
"She was laying on the porch and she was holding out her arms saying that she was burning, so I think a lot of us are still in shock," said one witness.
Neighbors tried to pull her to safety, but the flames and smoke were too strong. They say she died just steps away from the stairs.
"I do want the family to know that there were people here that did try," said one neighbor.
Close friends say Webb celebrated her birthday a few weeks ago and she was thrilled over a surprise cake and ice cream.
They say she always smiled and laughed with her friends and she will be dearly missed.
A second person suffered second degree burns, but is expected to be okay.
Fire officials say they can't rule out that the fire was caused by an electrical problem, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
