The Bryan College Lions have taken the lead at the 2017 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship.

The championship, which is presented by Bass Pro Shops, began Thursday on Lake Bemidji.

Officials say a few storms moved through the region on opening day, but it didn't seem to hurt the fishing.

Jake Lee and Jacob Foutz of Bryan College lead the fishing tournament Thursday with 16 lbs. and 6 oz. of fish weight.

“The caliber of fish in our area is just unreal,” Lee said. “There actually aren’t many boats around us. If we can get five more bites, they will be like the fish we weighed in today.”

Officials say the first-place weight came from four good-sized bass.

“The bites were about as slow as anything I’ve experienced in my life,” Lee said. “Today was slow and painful, but it worked out.”

Friday's take off began at 6 a.m. at Paul Bunyan Park, and weigh-ins begin at 2:30 p.m. at the same location.
