Ossoff backers draw strength from health care, Comey actions

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) - Backers of the Democratic candidate in a closely watched Georgia congressional race say they are motivated by House Republicans' vote to gut the Affordable Care Act and President Donald Trump's decision to fire the FBI director.

Jon Ossoff's fortunes in a June 20 matchup with Republican Karen Handel will be an early test of how those two issues are playing with voters.

Both parties see the outcome as a key measure of Republicans' standing ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

Spending on the race could reach or exceed $30 million, which would make it the costliest House race in history.
