A new Facebook feature is rolling out that let's you easily discover new friends who share some common interests. Discover Friends just appeared in the menu within the mobile app.
The way this works is to allow people to find people they might want to meet. It works closely with the social networks upcoming events.
Let's say you're going to an upcoming concert and you've responded that you're going. Using Discover Friends Facebook will show you everyone else who's indicated they'll be in attendance. With one tap on the app you'll be taken to a screen that will show you some details from that person's Facebook profile. You can swipe through the entire list and see who'll be there whether you're friends or not.
I'm not sure I like this.
First of all, it's pretty creepy for someone who's being stalked in real life. Imagine how uncomfortable and potentially threatening that could be for the stalker to know where you are going to be at a public event. I haven't been able to find out whether you'll show up on someone else's phone if you've blocked them. I wouldn't think it would but Facebook rolled this out without notifying anyone and without the option to remove yourself from the listings so you never know.
Discover People allows you to see their profile, send you a message or friend request. You'll also be able to see what they look like, where they live and any other information the user has made public.
I can see why some people will appreciate this feature. People looking for companionship or dating could very well love Discover People.
To me it's a little creepy. I wouldn't want complete strangers to find that my wife or daughter are going to be at an event and know what they look like. That has the potential to be scary. Also, I don't particularly care for the fact it's available only on mobile. That way fewer people will see the option. I don't like that you can't opt out either. Basically I don't like finding out that Facebook is adding something that puts my privacy at risk without telling me.
Facebook is rolling this out so you may not see the option at first. For instance it is on my iPhone but hasn't been pushed out to my Android phone.
The only way I've found to turn off this feature is to simply not post that you're going to an event which stinks because I'd like to know what friends will be there too.
Discover People will also show you strangers who live in the same town as you. I don't see any way to keep my profile from showing up in that option. Even if I turn off location settings my home city is still listed in my profile.
Facebook hasn't released an announcement that Discover People is a thing now so you likely didn't know about it.
Look, I probably have every friend and acquaintance as a Facebook friend already and if I want to meet new friends I'd prefer to do it in person. But that's just me.
