McMinn County officials held a press conference Wednesday afternoon to provide an update on the damage caused by a tornado that hit Athens overnight.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado hit Athens Tuesday afternoon. Preliminary reports show EF-2 damage, but the NWS said it's still assessing the damage.

Officials said 30 structures were destroyed and many homes are still without power.

There are numerous roads in McMinn County that officials asked drivers to avoid, including County Roads 700, 439, 372, 422, and 451.

Officials said a pregnant woman was thrown from her home in the one of the hardest hit areas. She was taken to a local hospital where she delivered a healthy baby.

Seventy-five volunteer firefighters provided aid during the storm.

No fatalities were reported.
