55-pound teen found after years locked in AL basement

HELENA, AL (WVTM) - The Alabama Department of Human Resources and Helena police are investigating after a 55-pound, 14-year-old boy was found isolated in a basement.

Helena police Chief Pete Folmar confirmed the teenager is gravely ill and was taken to a hospital.

Authorities said police were notified by Shelby County DHR after the boy was taken to the hospital.

The boy was was not enrolled in Shelby County Schools, and authorities were told he was homeschooled.

Authorities said the boy was adopted, but would not comment on when the couple adopted the boy, or if the people has adopted other children before.

Another female teen was also present in the house, but authorities would not comment on her at this time.

Richard and Cynthia Kelly have been charged with aggravated child abuse. They are being held on $1 million bond.
