Shumpert Leads Mocs in Season-Opening Win at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J.( --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team won its 24th season opener, defeating Rutgers 66-53 at The RAC Friday afternoon.

Chattanooga had four in double figures led by redshirt junior Chelsey Shumpert (Paducah, Ky.) who had a career-high 18 points and led all scorers. She was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and dished out three assists.

Senior Jasmine Joyner (Southaven, Miss.) was in foul trouble throughout the game, playing just 19 minutes. She chipped in 13 points and five rebounds and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Junior Keiana Gilbert (Pulaski, Tenn.) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards with three assists and senior Queen Alford was 2-of-5 from the 3-point line for 12 points and three rebounds.

The Scarlet Knights started the day off with a 6-0 lead before senior Queen Alford (Decatur, Ga.) hit the first of her two treys to put the Mocs on the board. Chattanooga would go on to take a 19-16 lead to close out the opening frame on free throws from Joyner and Shumpert.

Chattanooga led 35-28 at intermission but Rutgers would make a third quarter push and cut the lead to 37-26 with a 6-0 run. The Mocs responded with an 8-2 run to get back out front 45-38 with 2:46 to play in the third. By the end of the quarter, UTC’s lead stretched to 51-40 on a pair of free throws from Shumpert.

The Mocs lead would get as great as 17 points three times in the final frame.

Sophomore Ashlyn Wert (Lancaster, Pa.) saw significant playing time, clocking 21 minutes, with Joyner out for much of the game. She hit a career-best eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and had three blocked shots.

Chattanooga shot 41 percent for the game, making 23-of-56 from the field and 17-of-18 (94%) from the free throw line. It was the highest free throw percentage for UTC since making 13-of-13 at Elon on December 17, 2009.

Rutgers was led by Shrita Parker who hit a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch. She was the only Scarlet Knight in double figures with 10 points. She was 4-of-4 from the free throw line and dished out a game-best five assists. Aliyah Jeune and Khadaizha Sanders eight added eight points. Jeune had a team-best seven rebounds and four steals.

Chattanooga opens the home slate Monday night at the McKenzie Arena playing host to #20 Florida. The game is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. at the Roundhouse.
