CHATTANOOGA (GoMocs.com) -- The Chattanooga Mocs ran away with a 76-43 exhibition game win over the Covenant Scots Friday night in McKenzie Arena. Seniors Tre' McLean and Casey Jones combined for 32 points to pace the win.
"I think that the biggest thing that we were trying to get out of tonight was, obviously we want to win the game, didn't want to get anyone hurt and wanted those new guys to get in the game," coach Matt McCall stated. "We wanted them to play and experience being in the game and play significant minutes.
"Outside of David (Jean- Baptiste), everyone played double figure minutes. Nat Dixon, Makale (Foreman), Trayvond Massenburg, they all played significant minutes for us. I thought for what we were trying to get out the experience tonight, there was a lot of positive."
McLean tallied 20 points on nine-of-11 shooting with nine rebounds, two assists and three steals. Jones scored 12 in his first action since last December. He added seven rebounds and four steals. Bailey Spragg had a team-best 13 points for the Scots.
Spragg's two free throws with just over 14 minutes left in the first half to make it an eight-point contest, 16-8. The Mocs blew it open with a 22-3 run capped by Greg Pryor's layup at 2:58 pushing it to 38-11. The defense limited their visitors to one-for-12 shooting during the pivotal spurt while forcing nine turnovers.
It was a dominating effort defensively. The Scots shot just 32.7 percent (16-49) from the floor including 25 percent (5-20) from 3pt range. The Mocs scored 27 points off 26 Covenant turnovers.
The Mocs open the season in one week. They head north to Knoxville to tackle Tennessee in Thompson-Boling Arena on Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
"They have a Hall of Fame coach in Rick Barnes," McCall added. "Coach Barnes just seems like he wins wherever he goes, and at a number of different high-major programs. (We're) going to have to be able to handle the pressure.
"I think they have a lot of athletes out there that will crawl up in you. They are really tough defensively, with a similar offense from a motion stand point that we saw tonight, but we're dealing with a lot of athletes that are physically tough."
The game airs on SEC Network online and over the airwaves at 96.1 the Legend in Chattanooga. Links to live stats, video and audio are on GoMocs.com's men's basketball schedule page.
