What the Tech? App of the day: Hollar

Posted: Updated:

If you like discount dollar stores, Hollar! That's the name of one of the hottest apps in the app stores.

Hollar is an online dollar store where nothing costs more than 15 dollars with many items selling for only a buck. Items for sale in the app as well as on the www.hollar.com website are typical for what you would normally find in brick-and-mortar discount stores.

I found bottles and bottles of nail polish and tubes and tubes of lipstick. There's also a huge toy section, some electronics and household products.

Many of the items are generic products (again just like in discount stores) but there are name brand items as well. For instance, the health and beauty section and toy section have name brands including some Disney toys. How do the prices compare? Pretty well as far as I could see.

I found a popular kids toy from Disney, a Good Dinosaur Chomping Spot figure sells for $8 on Hollar and the exact same toy on Amazon is $12.78. A bottle of nail polish that sales for $2 at Hollar is priced at $6.49 at Amazon.

Nail polish and lipstick, for the most part are all $2.

It wouldn't be a dollar store with some dollar products and I found many household items such as candles, cleaning wipes and sponges for a buck. Hollar also sells apparel and accessories. Women's dresses were priced as low as $4.

Hollar launched about a year ago and is growing fast. The company's president told publications the average purchase is $30 and that in its first 6 months the company sold over $1 million worth of products.

The company is currently building a second warehouse on the east coast.

There is a $10 minimum purchase and free shipping for purchases of $25 or more. Hollar recently picked up a $30 million investment and to date has raised almost $50 million.
