UPDATE: Crime tape and police cars surrounded a home on the 4900 block of St. Elmo Avenue after a shooting early Tuesday morning.

When police officers arrived to the home they found a man shot in the stomach.

Bonnie Millican lives nearby she said she’s surprised by what happened.

"I was asleep around 2 o'clock when my neighbor comes banging on our room hollering that there were shots fired and I asked her 'what does she mean about that?' and she said it woke up her baby," Millican said.

Chattanooga Police said they found 52-year-old, Thomas Whatley sitting outside his mother's home suffering from a gunshot wound.

Hamilton County EMS transported Whatley to a local hospital for treatment.

Joanna Cook received an email alert from a neighborhood group in St. Elmo, she said she's shocked something like this happened just feet away from the community park.

"A lot of people come you know and have picnics and stuff. Of course it's not during the middle of the night, but still knowing that something happened right here is disturbing,” Cook said.

Police originally thought Whatley's injuries were non-life threatening, but now say he's in critical condition.

Roads were closed for about three hours this morning while police officers investigated the scene. Traffic re-opened just before the morning commute.

CPD's Violent Crimes Bureau is leading the investigation. They say they don't have any suspects at this time.

This incident follows a string of shootings over the weekend. Police have not said if this shooting was gang related.

Investigators ask anyone with information regarding this shooting to contact authorities.
