HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office has received a $750,000 dollar grant to hire six new School Resource Officers (SRO).

The grant is a Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Grant received from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Sheriff Jim Hammond and Rep. Chuck Fleischmann said the officers will help improve the safety, development, and mentoring of Hamilton County School students.

It's not yet known at which schools the new SRO's will be deployed.

The $750,000 represents the salary and benefits for six SRO's for a three year period.  The grant was written with the average salary of $35,421 for an SRO, however, it depends on how many years of service they have.

The officers are not hired right out of the academy. They have to have at least two years of law enforcement experience before being eligible to apply to be an SRO. This includes lateral transfers as well from other agencies.
