Catoosa Co. SO: Dead man found in burned car

Posted: Updated:

Investigators in Catoosa County are trying to figure out how a man ended up dead in a burning pickup truck on Saturday. It happened in the backyard of a home off Alabama Highway in Ringgold.

"We looked outside and thought somebody had been in a car wreck. That's a normal thing that happens. We're off Alabama Highway," Malachi Stargel, a neighbor said.

Crime scene tape and law enforcement vehicles only tell part of the story.

Neighbors like Malachi Stargel weren't too sure about what had happened. Catoosa County Sheriff Gary Sisk said it was a family member who called 911.

"Still have a lot of questions to be answered, but we did have an individual that lost their life, so thoughts and prayers are going to be with that person," Sheriff Gary Sisk said.

Investigators do not believe anything criminal happened here, but that's not making things easier for neighbors.

"But then I heard that a guy got burned in his car and it was just more like woah. Don't really know what happened there," Stargel said.

Sheriff Sisk hopes a timeline of the man's last 12-24 hours will make sense of it all, but knows this case brings some challenges.

"Very tough to get the answers that we need to try and find out what took place. With a fire, evidence burns up, so it's very difficult," Sisk said.

The sheriff said the man's body will be sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.
