Surrounded by the beauty of the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forest, the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway in North Georgia winds through the valleys and the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

As you continue south, you’ll find yourself in one of the more unusual towns in our region – Helen, Georgia.

“It is an Alpine-Bavarian themed town, “ said Jennifer Dennis, Helen tourism specialist. “It was started in 1969 by some businessmen and a local artist.”

The gingerbread trim was added to boost tourism, and it has paid off. Though only two square miles, Helen is the third most visited city in the state of Georgia.

One of the most popular fall activities in Helen, is the annual Oktoberfest celebration. The 46th annual festival continues this month through September 30.  For more information, contact the Helen Visitor Center at 706-878-1619.
