If you're not planning to buy the new iPhone 7, you can still feel like you're getting a new phone by downloading Apple's next iOS on Tuesday.
iOS 10 for iPhones and iPads is an all new experience for iPhone users with major improvements to Messages, Photos and Notifications, but before you rush to tap the download button, there are a few things you should do.
Make room on your device. Any iPhone or iPad running iOS 9 or later isn't going to have much trouble with this one. Apple's last operating system began managing storage for future updates by deleting apps to make room for downloading, but if you'd like to make the decision yourself now is the time. Photos and videos tend to take up the most space on smartphones so it's a good place to start. Connect your device to a computer and download all photos and videos from the phone. I have a folder on my computer desktop that stores all of my iPhone photos by date or trip name. You can also use an app and program such as Google Photos. These apps will store all of your photos in the cloud automatically as you take them. Once those photos are backed up or saved you can delete them from the device. By downloading then deleting photos and videos from your phone, you can clear up several gigs of storage space.
It's a good idea to do a little springlike cleaning by deleting any apps you never use. These aren't just taking up space on your home screen but also space. If you don't use them, delete them. You can always add them back later. Also check on apps that have pending updates. Many apps have already been updated and optimized for iOS 10, check to make sure all of your apps are up to date.
Complete a backup of your phone. This can be done in the iCloud or by connecting the phone to a computer and iTunes. Either is fine, but I recommend keeping a recent update on your computer. If something were to go wrong while updating to iOS 10 you'll be able to refresh your phone from the recent backup.
Check to see when iOS 10 is available for you to download. This is done from settings in the general tab. Any available software updates are listed here and can be downloaded with a tap. The iOS 10 update will be available on Tuesday but the time may not be exact. Check in settings if you're anxious to get started.
Update only over the computer or wifi. iOS 10 is a huge update and downloading it can take over an hour. If you try updating over your wireless carrier's data signal it could easily put you over your data limit. Downloading and updating over public wifi is also not recommended. It's best to update from home when you know you don't need your phone for at least 45 minutes. If you have difficulty downloading over wifi because the signal is either not good enough or too slow, you can download iOS 10 in iTunes and update your phone by connecting it to your computer.
A bonus tip: know your apple id and password. You will be asked for it during the updating process.
