A smoking fire caused thousands of dollars in damages to a Lee Highway apartment complex.

Chattanooga Fire Department said around 2:15 p.m. responded with six fire companies to the Villas at Oakcrest Apartments located at 7255 Lee Highway for a reported apartment fire.

Upon arrival, Captain Terri Roshell of Quint 8 reported "light smoke showing from a third flood apartment". Upon further investigation, it was determined that the fire has started on a third floor balcony of the apartment.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. Investigators determined that a third floor resident has been smoking on his balcony and extinguished the cigarette in a bucket the deck.

The fire was contained to the third floor balcony, however, there was fire control damage in the form of water which caused water damage to the two apartments below the origin of the fire. Damages were estimated at $40,000. There were no injuries reported.
