UPDATE: Student appeals expulsion after taking upskirt photo of teacher

MARION COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

UPDATE: The 17-year-old student’s parents appealed the expulsion decision in a meeting with Marion County Director of Schools Mark Griffith Thursday morning.

Griffith agreed to amend the decision to allow the student to return to the Marion County school system as a part of the alternative school.

This change will enable him to stay on a path to graduation. The other conditions of not being able to attend prom or other school activities remain in place.

Griffith said it is the same punishment handed down in a similar case last year where a student took an inappropriate picture of a female teacher in a restroom. He was initially expelled, appealed and was allowed to attend alternative school so he could move forward with his education.

PREVIOUS STORY: A Marion County High School senior has been expelled after taking an upskirt photo of a female teacher.

Marion County Schools Dr. Director Mark Griffith tells Channel 3 the incident happened Wednesday in the classroom. The student took the photo and then shared it with two other students.

The incident was reported to school staff by a student and the student who took the photo was interviewed.

Griffith says the expulsion was immediate and the student will not be allowed to return to school.

No disciplinary action was taken against the teacher, who Griffith says was unaware the photo was taken until it was reported to school administrators.
