Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers said a Georgia woman died Friday after she was hit by an oncoming vehicle near Chilhowee Lake.

Rangers said 64-year-old Shirley Jean Alexander Clifton got out of the vehicle she was riding in to look at a snake that was on the road on Foothills Parkway West before the vehicle hit her.

Blount County deputies and the Blount Rescue Squad took her to Blount Memorial. Officers said there was no reason to believe the driver of the vehicle that hit Clifton was at fault, but that the investigation is still ongoing.
